Dairy Free Sour Cream {Gluten Free, Vegan, only 5 Ingredients}
Sour cream is hard to replace when dairy is off the table, right? Many commercial dairy-free sour cream products contain ingredients you may not want to consume. One brand I found contains the following:
- Soybean oil
- Inulin (chicory root extract)
- Palm fruit oil
- Soymilk powder
- Rice starch
- Soy protein
- Carrageenan
- and the vague “natural flavors”
Some of those ingredients may not be a worry for you. However, some like grains, soy, or carrageenan, might be triggers for unpleasant reactions.
Soybean oil may not be what you want in your body, either:
Polyunsaturated fats, like those found in corn and soy oils, contain unstable long-chain fatty acids which are more susceptible to oxidation and can turn rancid quickly. – From Does Your Body Need An Oil Change?
So what can you do when you need some sour cream?
You can make a thick, rich mock sour cream with Wildly Organic Coconut Milk Powder and just a few simple ingredients!
Dairy-Free Sour Cream Recipe
It will, of course, have a slight coconut flavor. It will also be slightly sweet, so you’ll need to keep that in mind when deciding how to use it.
This coconut-based dairy-free sour cream is perfect for sweet recipes, of course! Creamy fruit salads, sweet fruit dips, quick bread, and muffins are perfect places for this “sour cream.”
What about savory recipes? Any comforting casserole or sauce-based dish where coconut is complementary is a great place for this dairy-free sour cream. Delicious creamy vegan curry, anyone?
While this dairy-free coconut sour cream is perfect for those on a vegan diet, it’s also great for carnivores.
Beef Stroganoff may not immediately come to mind but trust me, it works! This Dairy-Free Beef Stroganoff for the Instant Pot is so delicious it’s hard to stop eating it. I don’t even need to be dairy-free but couldn’t stop eating it during recipe testing!
What if you don’t want a prominent coconut flavor?
If you’re using this vegan sour cream in soup, sauce, or casserole try making it a bit thinner. You may need to increase the tangy ingredients a bit if you do.
Making it thinner will reduce the coconut flavor a bit. Since it’s already in something saucy the thickness won’t matter so much.
For thicker, savory dips try adding to hummus or pureed veggies to mute the coconutty flavor. Of course, if you want that delicious coconut goodness to shine through, by all means, let it!
What recipe will you try this dairy-free sour cream with?
- 1 1/4cup Wildly Organic Coconut Milk Powder
- 1/4teaspoon Wildly Organic Pink Himalayan Salt
- 1/3cup hot waterplus more as needed
- 1 1/2teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 1/2teaspoon raw apple cider vinegar
-
In a mixing bowl add the coconut milk powder and salt. Using a whisk or fork mix together well, breaking up any large clumps of coconut milk powder.
-
Add remaining ingredients and whisk until smooth.
-
It can be used immediately (will be warm) or refrigerate until chilled.
For less coconut flavor, add more water. You may need to increase the lemon juice and ACV, just add in small amounts until it's as tangy as you prefer.
