2-Ingredient Berry Fruit Leather {without the corn syrup!}
You’ve probably heard of a particular brand of fruit leather advertised on all the kids’ channels on cable TV. Those ads just roll up right on your screen… and the kids start begging.
Maybe you even thought they were somewhat healthy? I mean FRUIT is the first word, so surely they’re good for you… right?
They’ve been around for several decades, and maybe they used to be mostly fruit, but guess what the first ingredient is now?
Corn syrup. If you keep reading the ingredient list you’ll find other things in there that nature just did not intend at all.
So, what’s a health-conscious mom like yourself to do?
Make Your Own Berry Fruit Leather Without The Corn Syrup!
It’s so easy to make your own fruit leather. The only drawback is time. Yet, the benefits of having control over what you put into them (and into your child’s body) definitely outweigh the time involved to make them.
And you don’t even need a fancy dehydrator. An oven and a cookie sheet will work just fine (although the time will be less if you do have a dehydrator).
Oven or Dehydrator?
Take your pick.
If you have a dehydrator, consult the user manual for specifics for your model. But generally, 140 degrees for 6 to 8 hours (or a bit longer) should do the trick.
Only have an oven?
That will work too. If your oven will get down to 140 degrees, that’s great! Many newer models won’t allow you to set the temperature below 170, however, so you can crack the door a bit (which will also allow moisture to escape) or just go with that temperature.
There are many factors that can affect the time to completely dry the fruit leather. This is important for storage because any moisture left in them encourages mold growth.
Some things to consider:
- performance can vary between dehydrator models
- relative humidity can increase drying time
- how thick you spread the mixture will affect drying time

Any fruit or berry can be blended and dehydrated into fruit leather.
Yet, if you don’t have access to all the fruits (or the time to go pick fresh fruits or berries), then you won’t believe this trick!
Simply use applesauce as a base and mix in any healthy freeze-dried powdered berries!
Not only do they add gorgeous color and flavor, but also the antioxidant goodness that berries contain.
That’s it! Just 2 healthy ingredients and some time are all you need to make your own nutritious fruit leather without corn syrup!
Have you made your own fruit leather using freeze-dried berries?
- Dehydratorwith trays that have no holes
- Cookie sheets with parchment paper (or silicone mat)for oven dehydrating
- 4cups unsweetened applesauce
- 1tablespoon freeze-dried powdered blueberriesor any other flavor

In a mixing bowl, whisk together applesauce and berry powder until thoroughly combined.

Spread mixture evenly (about 1/8" thickness) on dehydrator trays

Set according to your dehydrator manufacturer's specifications OR

Set to 140 degrees for 6 hours.

Check after time elapsed to be sure fruit leather is thoroughly dried. If not, continue dehydrating until thoroughly dried.

Carefully peel dried fruit leather off of trays and cut into strips.

Roll with parchment paper, or stack with wax paper between for storage in an air tight container.

Preheat oven at lowest setting.

Prepare sheet pans with parchment paper or silicone mat(s).

Spread fruit leather mixture evenly, about 1/8" thick, on the prepared sheet pans.

Place in oven and set timer for 6 hours.

You can crack the oven door slightly if your oven doesn't go below 170 degrees.

Check fruit leather after 6 hours, if not completely dry continue in the oven until completely dried.

Carefully peel dried fruit leather off of trays and cut into strips.

Roll with parchment paper, or stack with wax paper between for storage in an air tight container.
