Homemade Hemp Heart Crackers

Homemade Hemp Heart Crackers

Winter is soup weather at my house and soup is always made better with some homemade hemp heart crackers!

Soup is definitely a favorite meal, but blended soups especially lack substance. It’s that bit of solid food that often fools our brains into believing that we’ve eaten food. This is where crackers and bread come in for many of us. They add crunch and substance to what would otherwise be a liquid meal.

Yet store-bought crackers have so many obstacles. Cheap crackers are usually full of ingredients we don’t like to eat with regularity. Crackers with whole, natural ingredients tend to be quite expensive.

Homemade crackers, however, are frugal, easy, and tasty — the best of all worlds.

Customize Your Crackers

Homemade crackers give us the option to customize the flavor to match the soup. Add one-half to one whole teaspoon of dried herbs to the crackers for an herbal kick:

  • Basil for tomato soup
  • Red pepper flakes for shrimp soup
  • Sage for pumpkin soup
  • Powdered garlic for potato soup
  • Mint for cold cucumber soup
  • Parsley for clam chowder

Add 1 teaspoon grated citrus zest for a vibrant cracker:

  • Lime zest in black bean soup
  • Lemon zest in chickpea soup
  • Orange zest in butternut squash soup

Brush the tops of the crackers lightly with water and sprinkle flavor on top:

  • Grated parmesan cheese
  • Flaked sea salt
  • More ground black pepper
  • Additional hemp hearts

Homemade Hemp Heart Crackers Go Beyond Soup

Homemade hemp heart crackers can be so much more than soup topping. Pack a few in lunch boxes for a crunchy snack. Grind the crackers in a food processor or blender to mix into meatballs or top casseroles. Make large crackers and spread them with nut butter or jam for a filling snack. Don’t forget to include them in buffets with an assortment of cheese.
