DIY Wax Melts

Photo of a bowl of wax melts and a wax warmer Are you a bit paranoid about candles in your house? Me too. I love burning candles in the fall and winter, but I'm always worried I'm going to forget to blow out the flame or that it will get knocked over. So when I discovered wax melts at the store one day, I was THRILLED! Wax melts are a great way to release a soothing scent into your house -- without the flame.

DIY Wax Melts

I figured it was about time I made my very own DIY Wax Melts with natural ingredients. If you look at the prepackaged types at the store, they're filled with ingredients, such as paraffin wax, which release harmful toxins into the air. I wanted to create a wax melt scented with essential oils for an all-natural experience. Using Wildly Organic Craft Oil makes this project so easy! If you haven't used Craft Oil, it is organic coconut oil that is for external use. Use it to condition your hair, moisturize your skin, and make these DIY wax melts! It's so fun to experiment with different essential oil blends for this project. I've used lavender for a soothing scent, a combination of orange and lemon for an energizing boost, and a blend of cinnamon bark and cardamom for the scent of autumn! Use your favorite essential oils, just make sure they are 100% pure essential oils! The base of these wax melts is made from beeswax (along with Wildly Organic Craft Oil). You can either buy beeswax in pellet form or in a bar. I used beeswax pellets in this tutorial. If you purchase it bar form, use a grater to make your own pellets and follow the directions as written.

Let's Make DIY Wax Melts!

All you need is:
  • water
  • 1/2 cup beeswax pellets
  • 1 cup Wildly Organic Craft Oil
  • 80-100 drops of essential oils of choice
  • silicone ice cube mold
Pour water into a small saucepan so that the water is about 1-inch high. Bring to a boil. Once boiling, place a glass bowl over the saucepan to create a double boiler. Add the beeswax pellets and Wildly Organic Craft Oil to the glass bowl and stir to mix. Allow them to melt completely which may take 5-10 minutes. Stir to combine once melted. Carefully remove the bowl from the heat (use oven mitts as it will be hot!). Add 50 drops of essential oils of your choosing and stir. Pour the hot wax into your silicone mold and allow to harden completely. Use in any fragrance wax melter. Makes approximately 12 wax melts depending on the size of your silicone molds.
