How to Oil Pull with Coconut Oil and Xylitol
What you heard of oil pulling?
The Ayurvedic practice of oil pulling has been around for thousands of years. You may have heard of it before, you may already be doing it, or this may be totally new to you. No matter where you’re at in your oil pulling Ayurvedic journey, I’m going to give you one awesome tip to help you amp up your oral health.
Ancient Ayurvedic practitioners believed that oil pulling was a way to cleanse and detox the body of various toxins. While there are not many studies on that, there was a study that showed that after just 40 days of oil pulling there was a 20% reduction in bacteria in the mouth.
I love the sound of that, but why not give this practice a little more oomph!?
That’s why in our home, we add xylitol when we oil pull!
What is xylitol?
Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol found in most plants. While it tastes very sweet, it’s actually sugar free. Love that! Plus, xylitol is great for the digestive system by feeding the good bacteria in our gut!
So why is it good for the oral health?
Celebrate because xylitol may actually starve off all of that yucky plaque-producing bacteria in your mouth. You can actually find xylitol in many toothpastes and oral care products.
We’re not saying this is a miracle practice, but we are saying you’ll feel so fresh and so clean after giving this practice a try!
How to Oil Pull:
It’s simple! Depending on the size of your mouth, take anywhere from one teaspoon to one tablespoon of melted Wildly Organic Coconut Oil and ¼ teaspoon of xylitol and swish in your mouth for at least 5 minutes.
The goal is to get up to a 10-15 minute oil pulling practice, but it does take some time to get there.
This is a mindful practice. As you pull the oil through each side of the mouth, feel the oil going between each tooth, pulling out anything that may be stuck between.
Be careful not to swallow any oil! Once you get to a point where you feel like you just can’t swish anymore, spit the oil into a trash bin or into the toilet. Do not spit it down the sink (it may solidify in your pipes)!
Next steps:
Brush your teeth, scrape your tongue and feel the difference!
