Healthy Frozen Hot Chocolate {Vegan}
It’s no secret I’m a big fan of chocolate. From chocolate cake with chocolate cherry ganache, to avocado chocolate mousse. This Frozen Hot Chocolate features cacao powder and a delicious smooth chocolate syrup.
What is Frozen Hot Chocolate?
There’s no such thing. It’s called a chocolate milkshake! That was my first thought when I heard the phrase frozen hot chocolate.
However, I will now concede that there is such a thing as frozen hot chocolate. And yes, it is delicious!
Chocolate milkshakes are obviously made with ice cream and a little milk. A frozen hot chocolate though is made with hot chocolate mix. In our case, cocoa powder, coconut milk powder, and coconut sugar.
It’s like having a cozy cup of hot chocolate, but the refreshing version for a warm day.
Why Chocolate is a Superstar
Chocolate doesn’t just taste irresistible, it’s a superfood ninja. Dark chocolate is packed with polyphenols that fight free radical damage. Chocolate’s flavanols have been shown to support heart, gut, and brain health. It’s also high in a variety of nutrients, including magnesium (source).
Magnesium is necessary for a healthy heart and cardiovascular system. It also plays a key role in muscle and nerve function. It’s even thought that it may play a role in preventing diabetes (source).
How to Make Frozen Hot Chocolate
I find that coconut milk powder tends to clump a little more than liquid milk. Instead of heating it up and whisking until smooth, we’re using a blender. Maybe it’s just me, but I have better success getting a smooth blend if I don’t add all of the liquid ingredients at first.
Topping it Off
While I normally opt for marshmallows (like these chocolate honey sweetened marshmallows!) in my hot chocolate, the frozen version is different. There’s no heat to melt the marshmallow and make it creamy here. Instead we’re using already creamy whipped cream.
You can use raw, grass-fed cream, or coconut cream if you’re dairy free. Organic grass-fed cream from the store is the next best option. This creamy frozen hot chocolate is packed with intense chocolate flavor. Serve it with homemade whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate sauce!
